Rob Imbeault shared thisThis city is filled with excellence and it’s an honour to be a small part of it.Rob Imbeault shared thisWhat a night! The Ottawa AI Collective brought together a small group of AI enthusiasts for an executive dinner with Rob Imbeault, CEO of Backboard.io and what followed was one amazing event. Rob showed up fully. Engaged, funny, and zero fluff. Just real talk from someone who has done it all and who's actually building. A few gems that stuck with me: → "Just do it. Build." → "Community and people first." → "AI is going to happen no matter what." One attendee summed it up best: "Last night was worth a $1,000 consulting session." Hard to argue with that. This is exactly why the Ottawa AI Collective exists. Not to talk about AI in theory but to get the right people in the room and let the real conversations happen. To Rob's point, people and community first! Rob Imbeault, thank you for your time, your stories, and your energy. Can't wait to see where Backboard.io goes from here. If you weren't there last night, next time, don't miss it. To join our next event, sign up to be a member of the AI Collective. Link in the comments. PS huge thank you to the organizing team! Rob Imbeault shared thisThe assumption that AI replaces engineers only works if we assume we stop building. We do not stop building. We never have. Every time the tools get better, the ambition gets bigger. The real shift is not fewer engineers. It is more leverage per engineer. And a much higher ceiling on what gets built. Better tools do not reduce builders. They expand what builders can do. That is where the real change is happening. If you are building in this space, remember this: Technology does not shrink ambition. It amplifies it. The interesting part is what happens when more people realize they can build something on their own. #AIBuilders #StartupThinking #FutureOfWork

Rob Imbeault shared thisOne of our Backboard.io users just pulled off a fantastic hack to get a ton of free model usage. I love it so much we’re absolutely not closing it. Here’s what he did: Went to OpenRouter and put $10 of credit on his account. OpenRouter gives ~1,000 calls/day on free models with that setup. He then brought that OpenRouter API key into Backboard (BYOK). Now he’s using those OpenRouter models through Backboard with: - Free state management (persistent memory across conversations) - Free web search wired into those models - No custom tool calling to maintain, it “just works” So for $10, he essentially unlocked a serious playground of LLMs that can remember, reason across sessions, and reach out to the web, all orchestrated through Backboard. This is exactly how I want people to think about Backboard: - Bring any provider you like (OpenRouter, OpenAI, Gemini, etc.) - Treat models as interchangeable infrastructure - Let Backboard handle the state, memory, and web search plumbing for you If you’re hacking on AI agents or multi-model workflows and you’re not doing something like this yet, you’re leaving a lot of leverage on the table.

Faster. Better. Cheaper. Who says you can’t have all three? Faster Stand up production‑ready AI infra in minutes, not months. No glue code, no DIY orchestration just one unified stateful API instead of dozens of brittle integrations. Better Tap into 17,000+ LLMs through a single, stateful API. Get best‑in‑class memory (multiple benchmark record holder), next‑gen RAG, web search, and tools all built in. Cheaper Stop overpaying for platform markup! Rob Imbeault shared this50 features that Claude doesn’t have, but can if you built on Backboard!Rob Imbeault shared thisClaude gave me a list of 50 things it can't do, but Backboard.io handles out of the box. I gave Claude access to our docs, let it read everything itself, and asked it to help break down the limitations of Anthropic's API. Think about that for a second. An Anthropic model explaining where Anthropic's API stops. No pushback. No debate. Just facts. The biggest one? Statelessness. Something you get in our free tier... 🫡 That single design choice creates way more downstream engineering pain than most developers realize when they first start building with LLMs. It is also the reason so many AI apps feel good in a demo and fall apart in the real world. I wrote about what that actually means, where the pain starts, and why most teams are quietly rebuilding the same infrastructure over and over again. Rob Imbeault shared thisOne of the biggest shifts for me as a leader was realizing that people are not here to fit into a system. They are here to grow through it. The best teams I have been part of understood that. They create space for people to take ownership. To get better at what they care about. To feel like their work actually matters. This is what Drive gets right. Autonomy. Mastery. Purpose. And it is what Steve Jobs meant when he said great people should tell you what to do. Strong teams are not built by control. They are built by trust and responsibility. Not everyone will stay forever. That is fine. If someone leaves better than they arrived, that is a win. For them. And for you. If you save one idea from this, save this: Great leadership is not about retaining everyone. It is about developing people while they are with you. #Leadership #StartupCulture #TalentDevelopment
-
Rob Imbeault shared thisThere are moments and stories that quietly shape how you see work, perseverance, and what actually matters. Terry Fox did not run for attention or recognition. He ran because he believed something bigger was worth the effort, even when it was hard and even when no one was watching. That kind of conviction is rare. Most meaningful work starts the same way. Quiet belief. Consistent effort. Progress that no one else sees yet. Before the recognition. Before the results. Before anyone is paying attention. That is where the foundation gets built. If you save one idea from this, save this: The things that matter most are usually built long before anyone notices them. I think about that often. Not just in business, but in how we show up every day. #Leadership #Founders #CanadianInnovation #StartupLife

Rob Imbeault liked thisRob Imbeault liked thisLet’s be honest: we are surrounded by AI agents these days, but most of us are still stuck in the 'basic chat' loop every single day. If you are still typing long, polite paragraphs, you’re using outdated methods. You are “chatting” when you should be “architecting”. You can bring shorthand to your work and life easily by using some Secret Codes (which have been hiding there for a while). There are many more codes than you imagine to explore, but I tried a few and found them pretty useful: 🚀 /ELI10 I run this every time my daughter asks "Why". It simplifies any concept for a 10-year-old. Perfect for checking if your own business strategy is actually clear. 🧪 /JARGONIZE The opposite of ELI10. Use this when you want a simple idea to "put on a lab coat" and start charging consulting fees. 🧠 /FORCE TRACE Stops the AI from guessing. It forces the model to show its internal "scratchpad" and think through every step of the math before giving an answer. 🛡️ /PRE-MORTEM The "Bad News First" code. The model assumes your project has already failed, then works backward to identify exactly why. ⚡ /80-20 Triggers the Pareto Principle. It forces the AI to identify the 20% of actions that will drive 80% of your results. 🤫 /NO PREAMBLE When you don’t have time for fluff like "I'd be happy to help!" This gets rid of the conversational filler and gives you raw data, nothing else. 🤖 /HUMAN Kills the "robotic" AI tone, so the text feels like it was written over coffee. 📐 /MECE If you need a well organised list so there are no overlaps and no gaps. Perfect for strategy. Which one are you trying first?

This article, and Ted Bilyea's excellent paper, reinforce what I have advocated for years. Canadian Agriculture requires a rapid reset from low cost supplier to domestic markets, and raw commodity exporting, to high value food products that address emergent, and insatiable, global demand for food. This renewed strategy addresses every one of Canada's urgent issues; demonstrated capacity to secure markets other than the US, productivity, sustainability, and restoring balance between the contributions, rewards, and influence of rural Canada and Western Canada and urban Ontario and BC.

Innovation in agriculture increasingly overlaps with broader scientific advancement. Significant capital is flowing into new technologies. Testing cycles are accelerating. More precise tools are becoming possible. The real constraint is regulatory clarity and commercialization capacity. Canada has an opportunity if we align policy, capital, and execution with the pace of innovation. Our conversation with Mike Frank explores what that means for crop protection and for the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture. UPL Corp | Agri Solutions https://lnkd.in/g-r45T3j

From Remote Communities to Urban Food Security: Vertical Farming Finds Its Purpose The The Ottawa Mission's launch of container-based vertical farming represents more than just another #AgTech deployment—it's a strategic pivot that demonstrates how technologies designed for Canada's most remote communities can address urban food insecurity at scale. Growcer's shipping container farms, now producing 20,000 pounds of fresh greens annually for Ottawa's most vulnerable residents, were originally developed to serve isolated First Nations communities where fresh produce costs can be prohibitive. The technology's migration from remote northern communities to urban Ottawa reveals something important about innovation scaling: the best solutions often find their market through necessity, then expand through adaptability. What makes this deployment particularly strategic is the operational model. The Ottawa Mission serves over one million meals annually, creating the demand certainty that makes container farming economically viable while addressing a critical social need. The $1.5 million RBC investment through the Ottawa Community Foundation isn't just funding technology—it's demonstrating how financial institutions can directly support food security infrastructure that generates measurable social impact. The broader implications extend beyond this single installation. With over 120 Growcer farms now operating across 62 Canadian communities, we're seeing the emergence of a distributed food production network that reduces dependency on long supply chains while creating local economic opportunities. This approach addresses both climate resilience and food sovereignty—two priorities that will only become more critical as extreme weather events disrupt traditional agriculture. The real test will be replication and integration. Can this model scale to other urban centers facing similar food security challenges? And how do we connect these distributed production nodes with the policy frameworks and procurement systems needed to make local food production a systematic solution rather than isolated innovation? #VerticalFarming #FoodSecurity #CanadianInnovation #SocialImpact #AgTech #CleanTech

Here's the thing about fresh produce in Alberta. We're paying $8 for strawberries in February that taste like cardboard and traveled 3,000+ km to get to your plate. That's broken. At Alberta Food Security Inc. we can grow 150+ varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs locally. Year-round. Backed by AI systems. With technology that cuts electricity costs dramatically. The math is simple: Local = fresher Efficient growing = lower costs Lower costs = wholesale prices, not premium retail markups. That's the problem we're solving. What's the one fruit, vegetable, or herb you've completely stopped buying because it's either too expensive or tastes like garbage every time? #Edmonton #Food #Business #Tech #AI

Great news for Canadian entrepreneurs and businesses focused on delivering value added production of goods and services on top of our comparative advantage in providing agriculture production for export to a hungry world outside North America. Combined with Transmountain delivering growing quarterly interest and dividends to Canadian taxpayers as its cash flow, profitability and volumes expand with growth outside North America. Two great examples of how agencies of the national government are leveraging our people, know how and financial capabilities to expand export markets, growth and jobs. >>>> FCC said Friday it would invest $2-billion through to 2030 to advance agtech innovation in the country’s agri-food industry. It will invest through an array of vehicles that includes funds, direct investments and other investment structures, providing equity, convertible equity and mezzanine loans to companies ranging from pre-seed startups to later-stage enterprises that serve the sector. “There is an opportunity to increase the adoption and access to innovation of the primary producers,” said FCC executive vice-president Darren Baccus, who will oversee the program. “There is a need in this industry for meaningful capital. Canada is so uniquely positioned to be able to do this.” Despite Canada’s status as a global breadbasket, the sector attracts little risk capital. Total venture capital invested in Canadian agribusinesses totalled just $881-million over the past four years combined, according to the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA). That is less than 4 per cent of what Canada’s information and communication technology sector raised over the same period. https://lnkd.in/g64Vudbz During the quarter, $311 million was paid to its parent Canada TMP Finance Ltd., which is itself owned by the Canada Development Investment Corp. That consisted of $148 million in interest payments and $163 million in cash dividends. https://lnkd.in/gg2e-5SF

The federal government’s recent move to close seven Agriculture Canada research stations and sharply cut departmental staff goes well beyond routine belt‑tightening. True red tape reduction means making smart cuts—streamlining where it makes sense—not slashing the core of an industry and research capacity that make Canada a world leader. This decision strikes at the very heart of our ability to innovate and compete, weakening the resilience of an agricultural sector the government itself calls vital to the nation’s economic growth and prosperity.

🚜 Sowing Seeds of Innovation in Alberta’s AgTech Sector 🌾 Brilliant Harvest Inc. has raised $500K in seed funding from SVG Ventures’ Pioneer Fund, adding momentum to its mission of transforming agricultural operations through AI-powered tools that enhance—not replace—dealer teams. Founded by industry veteran Remi Schmaltz, the Calgary-based startup first emerged from stealth with $1.3M in backing from Builders VC and AltaML Venture Studio. Now it’s one of Alberta’s top startups to watch in 2025. SVG’s John Hartnett sums it up best: 💬 “They are solving real problems in agriculture with scalable AI-driven solutions.” This investment is not just a bet on one startup—it’s a reflection of the growing strength of Alberta’s agtech ecosystem, supported by key partners like Alberta Innovates and its Scale-Up GAP program. #AgTech #AI #StartupFunding #AlbertaInnovation #SVGVentures #BrilliantHarvest #TechForGood #FutureOfFarming #CanadianStartups https://lnkd.in/gXDrWpUf

Doing a deep dive on the SVG Ventures | THRIVE Top 50 Agtech Companies for 2026 for FindaFarmer team. This is interesting and I'll be sharing this around with some of my farming friends and professionals in County of Grey. What is it?: The Agricultural Singularity. The "agricultural singularity" is defined as the point in time when land use for agriculture begins to shrink after expanding for thousands of years. Coined by Dr. Lenore Newman, Director of the Food & Agriculture Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley, it represents a fundamental economic transformation where the sector produces more output using fewer acres, less labour, and lower resource intensity. Key aspects of this transformation include: 👉 Expanding Agriculture's Role: The singularity envisions a world where agriculture extends well beyond traditional food production to include energy, materials, and biological manufacturing. 👉 Technological Enablers: This shift is driven by foundational technologies such as automation, AI-enabled robotics, computational biology, and advanced crop inputs. 👉 Sustainability as a Prerequisite: Achieving the singularity depends on innovations that reduce the environmental impact of farming without imposing economic penalties on growers. 👉 Blended Financing: Because venture capital alone cannot fund a structural shift of this magnitude, realizing the agricultural singularity will require a "blended capital stack" that combines venture innovation with public government funding and institutional infrastructure capital. Ultimately, the agricultural singularity represents the long-term thesis beneath the current AgTech market reset, highlighting a shift toward resilient technologies that can fundamentally alter how land, labour, and food systems operate.
