Mavrogordatos was born in Athens and completed his undergraduate studies at the Law Faculty of the University of Athens, receiving two degrees: first in Politics and Economics (1967), then in Law (1969). Thanks to a Fulbright grant, he pursued his graduate studies in the United States, receiving his M.A. in Political Science from Purdue University (1972) and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1979). For thirty years (1982-2012), he taught at the University of Athens a variety of courses in Modern Greek History, Comparative Politics and Political Sociology, including courses on World War II, on American Politics and on Athenian democracy. He also taught as a visiting professor at Tufts University, the University of Salzburg, the Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center, and the University of California, Berkeley.
As an undergraduate, he was a leader of the student movement and became International Vice-President of the National Union of Students (EFEE). After the fall of the dictatorship in 1974, he was an active member of the Group of Scientists for a Democratic Constitution and edited the small volume of proposals that the group produced. Subsequently, he became adviser to the Opposition during the debate on the new Constitution. Most recently he was a member of the National Council for Research and Technology (2005-2008). Against the heightened awareness brought about by the bicentennial of the French Revolution, it is surprising to (re)discover that Duverger chooses to dismiss the Jacobins as a mere parliamentary group. In fact, they became the first mass party. This is the key to an organizational explanation of the course taken by the Revolution. It raises new and compelling doubts about the identification of mass parties with the working class and about the democratic credentials of such parties. It also raises the broader question whether the modernity of political parties is a matter of organization or, rather, of legitimacy.

In most of the world, the election of the 44th President of the United States was justly celebrated as an event of historic significance. It proved the irrepressible vitality of the American Dream, precisely at a time when American capitalism appeared to be crumbling. It also confirmed the unique adaptability of an admirable political system, which never ceases to evolve, even though it is based on the oldest written Constitution. Fear of repetition or banality must not hinder the exploration and evaluation of the manifold significance that the Obama victory has on several different levels, beyond race as such. He is indeed the first African-American president, and his election was regarded as finally laying to rest a painful legacy of slavery, civil war, and discrimination. But he is also a person of mixed blood, who belongs more to the present and the future than to the past, thanks to his multiracial and multicultural background. He had to persuade not only whites, but also many blacks who understandably did not recognise him immediately as one of their own.

The compulsory population exchange of 1923 was apt to spawn a variety of myths. Concerning its economic and social consequences for Greece, there are three interrelated and enduring myths.The first myth asserts that the Venizelists chose to settle the refugees in the periphery of Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Volos, and other urban centers with the crass purpose of winning elections. The second claims that the refugees contributed decisively to the industrial development of Greece. The third postulates that the refugees after 1930 turned to the Communist Party (KKE). As with all effective myths, there is a grain of truth here as well, but it is based only on a fraction of the urban refugees and ignores completely the other urban refugees and the rural refugee settlement. It obscures the single most important and indeed sweeping consequence of the population exchange for Greece: land reform and the country’s irrevocable transformation into a society of small proprietors in town and country. Although launched earlier, land reform became unstoppable and irreversible because of the population exchange. Constitutional protection of private property was effectively suspended and lands were essentially confiscated.The social revolution that many feared would come from the refugees was in fact made for them but without them.

Συνεχίστηκε επίσης ως οιονεί θρησκευτικό σχίσμα μεταξύ των πιστών του Βενιζέλου και εκείνων του νεκρού βασιλέα Κωνσταντίνου. Εξακολούθησε να έχει και ταξικές διαστάσεις, αλλά με σημαντικές ανακατατάξεις. Τέλος, ο Εθνικός Διχασμός ως εμφύλιος πόλεμος αναζωπυρώθηκε από την εκτέλεση των Έξι και υποτροπίασε με το Κίνημα του 1935.

Ωστόσο, υπάρχουν αρκετά σημεία έντασης μεταξύ της παρουσίας του και των τυπικών προδιαγραφών του κοινοβουλευτισμού.

After the fall of the dictatorship in 1974, the same archaic structure of extreme fragmentation was preserved in trade unions and other occupational interest groups, stemming from the independent existence of ‘first-degree,’ ‘second-degree,’ and ‘third-degree’ organizations. After 1981, PASOK legislation not only did not change this structure, but even made it compulsory. It also made proportional representation compulsory in internal elections, with the result that the organizations were taken over and appropriated by the political parties, through their own factions. Only the associations of business were allowed to function freely, within the framework of the general legislation on associations, just as they had during the dictatorship. Party manipulation, constant dysfunction, ineffectiveness, personal strategies of the leaders, provocative waste and corruption made the other organizations disreputable and repugnant in the eyes of those they are supposed to represent. In the years of the crisis, party labels are changing or are ignored, while the protagonists are small groups (the so-called “guilds”) that defend their own privileges, leaving without representation all the others, that is, the overwhelming majority of the citizens.

Η ασυναίσθητη απώλεια της ιστορικής μνήμης κάποτε έχει ως αφετηρία την επιθυμία όχι απλώς να εξωραϊστεί, αλλά στην κυριολεξία να σβηστεί τελείως το παρελθόν. Τόσο στο ατομικό όσο και στο συλλογικό επίπεδο, η επιθυμία αυτή αποτελεί τυπικό χαρακτηριστικό ψυχοπαθολογικής κατάστασης. Ετσι στη χώρα μας, από το 1924 και ιδίως τα τελευταία σαράντα χρόνια, έχει γίνει τόσο συστηματική πλύση εγκεφάλου ώστε επικρατεί σφοδρή προκατάληψη και πλήρης άγνοια όχι μόνο για τον βασιλικό θεσμό γενικά, αλλά και για την ελληνική Ιστορία ειδικότερα. Εξακολουθεί να επικρατεί αντιβασιλική υστερία και η νοσηρή επιθυμία να εξαλειφθεί το βασιλικό παρελθόν της χώρας. Γι’ αυτό και επικρατεί πλήρης αδιαφορία για πολύτιμα ιστορικά κειμήλια από το παρελθόν αυτό. Το πιο εύγλωττο παράδειγμα αποτελούν τα βασιλικά εμβλήματα (στέμμα, σκήπτρο, ξίφος) που είχαν φιλοτεχνηθεί για τον Όθωνα, ως πρώτο βασιλέα της Νεότερης Ελλάδας.
