Türk modernleşme tecrübesinde basın ve yayın önemli bir görev üstlenmiş ve kurucu bir hüviyete sahip olmuştur. Düşünce dünyasının farklı kesimleri fikirlerini gazete ve dergiler vasıtasıyla halka iletmiş, halka modern anlamda vatan, millet, milliyet gibi kavramlar bu unsurlarla tanıtılmıştır. Cumhuriyet’in ilanının ardından din işlerini tanzim etmek maksadıyla kurulan Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, 1968’de Diyanet Gazetesi’ni neşretmeye başlamıştır. Dini meselelerin yanında halkın genel kültürünü de tahkim etme çabası gösteren Diyanet Gazetesi, devletin ortaya koyduğu politikalar hususunda da devlet siyasetini destekleyen bir duruş sergilemiştir. Bu duruşun önemli örneklerinden biri de 1974 Kıbrıs Barış Harekâtı sürecinde gazetenin yaptığı yayıncılık faaliyetlerinde görülebilir. Türkiye için büyük bir öneme sahip olan Kıbrıs Adası’nda çeşitli antlaşma ve sistemler denenmiş olmasına rağmen barış ve düzenin sağlanamamış olması ve Yunanistan’ın desteklediği askeri unsurların adanın meşru yönetimine askeri darbe gerçekleştirmesi sebebiyle Türkiye, uluslararası antlaşmalardan doğan garantörlük hakkı doğrultusunda 20 Temmuz 1974’te adaya bir harekât düzenlemiştir. Devleti destekleme misyonu doğrultusunda Diyanet Gazetesi Kıbrıs Barış Harekatı’na, harekât öncesi, harekât anı ve sonrasında yer vermiş ve devletin söylemine muvafık bir söylem ortaya koymuştur. Sonuç olarak Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı Diyanet Gazetesi vasıtası ile Türk düşünce geleneğindeki din ve siyasetin kardeş olduğu, devletin dini koruma ve yüceltme dinin ise onu desteklemekle görevli bulunduğu tasavvurunu hayata geçirmiştir. Çalışmada uluslararası meseleler karşısında Diyanet Gazetesi’nin nasıl bir söylem geliştirdiği probleminin Kıbrıs Barış Harekâtı süreci etrafında tetkik edilmesi amaçlanmış ve bu istikamette söylem analizi yöntemi ile gazetedeki Kıbrıs konulu yazılar incelenmiştir. Varılan sonuç ise Diyanet Gazetesi’nin Kıbrıs Barış Harekâtı sürecinde devlet siyasetini tahkim edici bir yayıncılık politikası izlediği olmuştur.

In the Turkish modernization experience, the press and media played an important role and had a founding identity. Different segments of the world of thought conveyed their ideas to the public through newspapers and magazines, and concepts such as homeland, nation and nationality were introduced to the public in these modern terms. The Presidency of Religious Affairs, which was established to organize religious affairs after the proclamation of the Republic, started to publish the Diyanet Gazetesi (Religious Affairs Newspaper) in 1968. The Diyanet Gazetesi, which strives to support the general culture of the people as well as religious issues, has taken a stance that supports the policy of the state regarding the policies put forward by the state. One of the important examples of this stance can be seen in the publishing activities of the newspaper during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Because even though various treaties and systems have been tried on the Cyprus which is an important island for Turkey, there has been always a failure to maintain order and peace, Greece supported to perform military coup to the island’s legitimate government, Turkey has made an operation in accordance with the right of guarantee arising from international treaties on 20 July 1974. In line with its mission to support the state, Diyanet Gazetesi included the Cyprus Peace Operation before, during and after the action and put forward a parallel discourse with the state. As a result, the Presidency of Religious Affairs has realized the understanding that religion and politics are brothers in the Turkish thought tradition and that the state is responsible for protecting and exalting religion while the religion supports it through Diyanet Gazetesi. In this study, it was aimed to examine the problem of how Diyanet Gazetesi developed discourse in the face of international issues around the Cyprus Peace Operation process and accordingly, the articles on Cyprus in the newspaper were analyzed by discourse analysis method. The conclusion was that Diyanet Gazetesi followed a publishing policy that supported state policy during the Cyprus Peace Operation.

The incidence of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in Greek-Cypriot children aged less than 15 years between 1990 and 2009 was examined along with gender differences concerning the age of onset and the seasonal variation at manifestation of the disease. All newly diagnosed cases of T1DM in children less than 15 years old were registered with the capture-recapture method from 1990 until 2009. The overall mean annual incidence during these 20 years is 12.46 per 100,000. A comparison of the incidence between the two decades (1990-1999 vs 2000-2009) indicated a rising trend, from 10.80 per 100,000 person-years during the first decade to 14.44 per 100,000 person-years during the second decade. There was an overall male predominance (M/F: 1.05), which is in agreement with the male predominance in the population less than 15 years of age, except for the group who manifested T1DM at ages 10-15 years where females prevail. The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has a high rate of human transit as a result of tourism, human trafficking, and migration, which could contribute to the rate of HIV infection. The island is divided into 2 states-the northern portion is mainly populated by Turkish-Cypriots, and the southern portion is populated by Greek-Cypriots. The aim of this study was to assess the dynamics of HIV infection in both segments of Cyprus using a mathematical model. Materials and Methods: Data of HIV-positive individuals diagnosed during the period 1997-2018 in northern Cyprus were obtained from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ministry of Health database, yielding a total of 129 cases, and data for the southern region, the Republic of Cyprus, were retrieved from a European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) 2013 report and ECDC/World Health Organization 2017 data. The total number of reported HIV infections was 1057. A mathematical model was used to evaluate the current and future HIV infection rate. Results: Stability analysis of the equilibrium point-disease-free or endemic-was conducted using the Lyapunov function. The basic reproduction number, represented as R 0 , is a measure of the potential for disease spread and serves as a threshold for stability. The R 0 value was 0.83 in northern Cyprus and 0.040 in southern Cyprus. An R 0 indicated a disease-free equilibrium. Conclusion: The calculations suggest that there is no current HIV epidemic on either part of the island; however, the model predicted a significant increase in the near future.

This paper describes the factors that influenced urban development in Cypriot cities and how the Cypriot planning system evolved to address such factors. Limassol is chosen as the case study for an in-depth approach in order to come to general but precise conclusions. The paper offers an interpretive-historical narrative of the urban development of the city from the latter part of the Ottoman period to the present day in order to understand the mechanism through which Cypriot cities have grown and the role of planning in shaping their form and influencing how they function. The objective is to provide a comprehensive description of factors, mechanisms and actors involved in the emergence and transformation of Limassol, and in particular the role of planning in its historical evolution and in more recent regeneration and development projects. The narrative was constructed using a variety of primary and secondary sources, including travellers' reports, historical cartography, press articles and interviews with expert stakeholders. The paper concludes with an assessment of the current state of planning in Cyprus, its potential future directions, and remarks on the effectiveness of the narrative in interpreting causal pathways of development and evaluating the impact of planning actions and policies.

This volume is the second part of a 3-volume annotated catalogue designed to record every printed map of Cyprus within a span of 400 years, from ca 1485 to 1885. Along with the image and the technical features of each map, the user can find information on the map’s occurrence and/or reoccurrence in various editions, repositories that hold copies of the map and facts regarding its maker(s) and the context of its production, as well as connections with cartographic prototypes and derivatives. The second volume is devoted to the 17th century, while the first covers the 15th to the 16th centuries and the forthcoming third volume will cover the 17th to the 19th centuries.

In this paper, the School for Deaf Children that was opened under the rule of the British Administration in Cyprus is examined. The school was opened in the 1953– 1954 academic year and became the second private education institution on the island. Additionally, it was a mixed school that served both the Greek and Turkish communities. Although the school was initially opened with contributions from the Rotary Club, it continued to provide educational services with funds from the British Administration, students' parents and voluntary contributions. During the period of mixed education, the school could not adopt a fully settled structure in terms of the building in which it was locate and was moved to different areas during that period. In the period when the Brit-ish government transferred responsibility for the education on the island to the Greek and Turkish communities, the school continued to provide services on a mixed basis. However , after the events of 1963, the Turkish teachers and students began to leave the school. Today, it continues its activities in southern Nicosia, whereas in the northern part of the island, the Lapta School for People with Hearing and Speaking Disabilities was opened in 1975 in order for Turkish students to continue their education. The present study is supported with information obtained from Education reports and Cyprus Gazette resources as well as national and international works and verbal resources.
