Mikael Nordfeldth: GNU social and the boost of the federated social web
The centralized social network services have led to a regression in the Web and its distributed structure. Facebook and Twitter have jeopardized the sovereignty and privacy of the users annulling the power to democratize the public agenda of the Web articulated on self-hosted web pages and the blogosphere. Blogs are still at the base to restore the initial values of the web but also from the community of free software, free platforms have been developed to promote a Web that respects the privacy and sovereignty of users: the federated social web.
GNU social, supported by the Free Software Foundation, is is the primary social platform project for promoting the federated social web. Its distributed architecture, modularity, and versatility make it the leading candidate to become the free standard of the Sharing Economy and of distributed social networks.
Mikael Nordfeldth is lead maintainer and developer for GNU social. He and Umeå Hackerspace have received funding from Internetfonden in Sweden the last couple of years to improve and promote the GNU social software.
During the GNU social camp Mikael Nordfeldth will give a Master Class on GNU social and its implementation of Ostatus, the protocol by which the different nodes of this distributed social network communicates with each other. Ostatus implementation of Diaspora will also be subject of the Master Class.
In the practical field Mikael Nordfeldth will guide a workshop with all those who wish to start using Ostatus and helping to maintain and developing within GNU social and its plugin system.
His participation in the GNU social camp will be key to its role as incubator for new key features and plugins in the recovering of socialization spaces, on the Web, captured by the centralized services.
