IDK about you, but I found out from a group chat that Bitwarden Personal tier now costs $20/year as opposed to $10/year. I was about to get angry that I wasn't notified, and it seems like @bitwarden will only notify you 15 days before renewal, giving one very little time to migrate away if one desires to do so.
It seems that it's legal? I still consider this a malpractice.

back to top@kytta @bitwarden man I wish Apple passwords was accessible on Linux
Hi @kytta,
usually price raises comes with a special right to cancel the contract (Sonderkündigungsrecht), doesn't it? IMO german civil law grants that.
@kytta @bitwarden I'm also sad about that. But I'll happily pay that. The only disappointing thing is that they don't announce it earlier.
@kytta Hi there, and thanks for the feedback!. Here is what we shared prior to any changes:
- Blog post
- Community Post
- Email notices prior to renewal.
Bitwarden is 1.65 a month or 19.80 per year, and still offers one of the best free plans, including access to a standalone authenticator app.
You can also self-host on prem if you prefer.
Here is the RSS feed for the blog: https://bitwarden.com/blog/feed.xml
Let me know if you have any questions!
@bitwarden hi, thank you for the comment! I mostly agree with everything you said, however I still find the disclosure quite lacking.
Blog post
The post is titled "Bitwarden launches enhanced premium plan", which sounds like you introduce a new plan and doesn't imply price increase. The RSS description says "Bitwarden Premium and Families plans now have new capabilities ...", which also does not necessarily imply price increase. If anything, both sound as if you add new features at no extra cost. But it's subjective; the post does talk about the raised prices.
Community post
Not quite sure what you mean by it, but I guess it's the forum thread. I would actually also expect you to publish the link to this blog post in your social channels, e.g. your Mastodon account, but you didn't. This is weird, considering you cross-post every other post to your Mastodon account.
Email notices prior to renewal
True, but the notices are scheduled just 15 days before renewal. That means that, if someone would not want to pay more and decide to self-host or migrate, will only have 15 days to do so. The information is already public, so I think it's just good conduct if you notify about the price changes as early as possible.
So, we have a blog post (not everyone follows the blog), no Mastodon post, and no email. For things as important as billing, I would expect everyone to get an email with clear steps on how to: a) downgrade; b) migrate; or c) self-host. It would be a nasty surprise to be "the last person" to find out. And I'm not alone: Go to Reddit or other public spaces to find loads of comments saying "why tf do I find out in a Reddit post and not via email?!".
But yes, as I said, I agree on everything else: It's still an incredible price, and your free tier is still better than any competition, so I'm not migrating away any time soon :)
@kytta Thanks for the following up, I'll be sure to pass that to the team!
