알제리의 노예제

알제리 지역에는 고대부터 노예제가 존재했다는 기록이 있다. 알제리는 사하라 이남 아프리카에서 온 흑인 노예들을 실어 나르는 사하라 횡단 노예 무역로의 중심지였으며, 바르바리 해적에게 포로로 잡힌 유럽인들을 대상으로 하던 바르바리 노예 무역의 중심지이기도 했다.

노예제도는 1848년에 공식적으로 금지되었지만, 알제리의 프랑스 식민 당국은 노예 해방이 알제리인들 사이에서 프랑스에 대한 반란으로 이어질 것을 우려하여 시행을 미루었고, 노예제도와 노예 무역은 20세기 초까지도 여전히 지속되었다.
