Η 69η Απονομή των Βραβείων της Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου, που τίμησε τις καλύτερες επιδόσεις στο χώρο του κινηματογράφου για το έτος 1996, έλαβε χώρα στις 24 Μαρτίου 1997. Η τελετή πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Θέατρο Κόντακ στο Χόλιγουντ της Καλιφόρνιας και την παρουσίαση ανέλαβε για πέμπτη φορά ο Μπίλυ Κρίσταλ.[1] Στην αμερικανική τηλεόραση μεταδόθηκαν από το δίκτυο ABC.
Ο Άγγλος ασθενής ήταν η ταινία με τις περισσότερες υποψηφιότητες (12) και κέρδισε τα περισσότερα βραβεία της βραδιάς (9) συμπεριλαμβανομένου και του Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Ταινίας. Δύο βραβεία Όσκαρ κέρδισε η ταινία Φάργκο, η οποία είχε επτά υποψηφιότητες.
