Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

About us

We are the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. We host a technology infrastructure that makes possible billions of monthly visits to Wikipedia. Since 2003, we have supported the hundreds of thousands of volunteer editors who edit, expand, and curate the Wikimedia projects. We equip these volunteers with the most up-to-date tools, ensure connections to Wikipedia are fast, safe, and private, and develop new technology and products to meet the demands of our readers and editors. We provide individuals and organizations around the world with funding to increase the knowledge on Wikipedia. We also undertake legal and advocacy efforts to protect people’s right to free knowledge. We are a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $11. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. We are a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California.

  • "Free" on the internet means more than you might think. On Wikimedia projects, free content goes beyond price. It means content that anyone can use, share, and even modify, as long as they follow defined terms. This usually involves licenses like Creative Commons, which allow reuse with conditions such as giving credit to the original creator or sharing new versions under the same terms. • Graphic with the message “Free content is about more than cost. It’s about what you can build.”
  • What happens when access to information is restricted? At different moments, the global Wikimedia community has responded when open access to knowledge was at risk. This has included coordinated blackouts to raise awareness about legislation affecting how information can be shared online, as well as efforts connected to restoring access in places where Wikipedia had been blocked. • The winners of the 2025 Wiki Loves Monuments contest are in 🎉📸 For sixteen years, volunteers around the world pick up their cameras and document cultural heritage sites for Wikimedia Commons, freely licensing their photographs so that anyone, anywhere, can use them forever. The winning images of the world’s largest photo contest capture sites that might otherwise go undocumented or whose documentation might otherwise sit behind a paywall, in a private archive, or nowhere at all. • Through partnerships with more than 100 of the world's top subscription-only databases, the Wikipedia Library gives Wikipedia's most active editors free access to knowledge resources in over 30 languages: academic journals, newspapers, archives, and more. Partners include outlets like The Wall Street Journal, De Standaard, and The Hindu. To qualify, an editor needs an account at least six months old and a minimum of 500 edits across Wikimedia projects. It's designed for people who are serious about creating articles worth reading. The program started as a community project funded by grants. It now supports thousands of editors across every language Wikipedia. More than a million links have been added to Wikimedia projects by Library users. Wikipedia needs reliable sources. The Wikipedia Library exists to make sure those sources are always within reach. • Two people collaborate at a table with books and a laptop in a library, while another reads nearby. Text reads: Good Wikipedia articles need good sources. But many of the world's most reliable sources are behind paywalls. The Wikipedia Library solves that problem.
  • "If we care about an ever-expanding and trusted information ecosystem for the future, we have to care about preserving human knowledge." As Wikipedia celebrates its 25th birthday, the Wikimedia Foundation took the stage at the International Journalism Festival 2026 to explore the relationship between journalism and the world's largest online encyclopedia, and what’s at stake if that ecosystem weakens. Anusha Alikhan, Chief Communications Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, and Raju Narisetti, Board of Trustees member, joined a panel hosted by columnist Bobby Ghosh to discuss shared values like accuracy, independence, impartiality, and accountability, as well as the challenges posed by AI. • [UPDATE] RightsCon 2026, scheduled for Lusaka, Zambia, has been canceled. For over a decade, the Wikimedia Foundation has taken part in RightsCon as a unique and critical space for advancing access to knowledge and human rights online. The Foundation strongly supports Access Now and the essential work they do to convene this global community and address challenges together. We hope to reconnect with partners and the global digital rights community in the near future. Mark your calendars: Wikimedians from around the world will join society leaders, researchers, and policymakers at RightsCon 2026, the world’s leading summit on human rights in the digital age. In 2026, the event will take place in Lusaka, Zambia, but guests can also tune in virtually for sessions. This year, Wikimedia Foundation staff and Wikimedians will contribute to important conversations highlighting how free and open knowledge depends on global digital rights. The Wikimedia Foundation has participated in RightsCon for over a decade, engaging with the global digital rights community to protect access to knowledge, privacy, and freedom of expression online. the future of the Wikimedia Foundation’s projects. • Wikipedia continues to celebrate 25 years of free knowledge with two wins at The Webby Awards! 🎉 The "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule has been recognized as People's Voice Winner in the Websites & Mobile Sites, Education category. And the video celebrating our 25th birthday campaign "Knowledge is Human", created in partnership with the agency Kin, has been crowned a People's Voice Winner in the Video & Film, Corporate Social Responsibility (Branded) category. Hailed as the "internet's highest honor", The Webby Awards is the leading international awards organization recognizing excellence on the internet. • Wikipedia's knowledge has always been and will remain freely licensed. However, while our content is free, our infrastructure is not. Wikimedia Enterprise helps organizations accessing Wikimedia content at massive scale, including tech platforms and AI companies, to do so through a structured, accountable partnership rather than simply scraping it uncontrolled from the web. Through Enterprise’s commercial-grade APIs, customers get high-volume, high-frequency access to Wikimedia’s freely-licensed content for their business needs while directly supporting our financial sustainability. The revenue goes directly back to the Wikimedia Foundation's mission: keeping Wikipedia free, open, and ad-free for everyone. Learn more about Wikimedia Enterprise ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eQvdMJpW

  • You've probably seen a quote misattributed on the internet. It's frustrating. Wikiquote exists so that doesn't have to keep happening. It's a free, collaboratively edited collection of sourced quotations from historical figures, authors, films, TV shows, and public speeches. Every quote comes with a citation. Here are four ways to use it. Find your new favorite quote ➡️ https://w.wiki/36L5
