    Gartner just surveyed 350 large enterprises deploying AI. 80% cut jobs. Some by as much as 20%. The result? The companies that cut the most showed nearly identical financial returns to the ones that cut the least. In several cases, the ones that cut less performed better. No correlation between AI-driven layoffs and improved ROI. None. Gartner's Helen Poitevin was direct: "Workforce reductions may create budget room, but they do not create return." Cutting people frees up cash. It does not generate value. Most leadership teams are conflating the two. So what actually works? Upskilling staff to work alongside AI. Redesigning roles around what humans do well vs. what AI does well. Building operating models where people guide autonomous systems instead of getting replaced by them. There's a real difference between using AI to do the same work with fewer people and using AI to unlock work that was previously impossible. The first saves money on paper. The second compounds over time. We've already seen the pattern. Klarna cut 700 CS roles, watched quality decline, and started rehiring. IBM automated HR functions and reversed course. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia reversed 45 AI-driven layoffs after realizing those roles were never redundant. Gartner predicts half of companies that attributed headcount cuts to AI will rehire under new titles by 2027. If someone in your org is building an AI business case around headcount reduction, share this data. The assumption that fewer people equals better margins equals better returns is not supported by the evidence. AI is not leading to a jobs apocalypse. It's changing the shape of what people do.     Microsoft just released a 35-page report on medical AI - and it’s a reality check for healthcare. The paper, “The Illusion of Readiness”, tested six of the most popular models (OpenAI, Gemini, etc)… across six multimodal medical benchmarks. And the verdict? The models scored high on medical exams. But they’re not even close to being real-world ready. Here’s what the stress tests revealed: ▶ 1. Shortcut learning Models often answered correctly even when key information, like medical images, was removed. They weren’t reasoning - they were exploiting statistical shortcuts. That means benchmark wins may hide shallow understanding. ▶ 2. Fragile under small changes Making small tweaks caused big swings in predictions. This fragility shows how unreliable model reasoning becomes under stress. In visual substitution tests, accuracy dropped from 83% to 52% when images were swapped - exposing shallow visual–answer pairings. ▶ 3. Fabricated reasoning Models produced confident, step-by-step medical explanations - but many were medically unsound… or entirely fabricated. Convincing to the eye, dangerous in practice. And more importantly, healthcare isn’t a multiple-choice exam. It’s uncertainty, incomplete data, and high stakes. So Microsoft’s team calls for new standards: - Stress tests that expose fragility - Clinician-guided guidelines that profile benchmarks - Evaluation of robustness and trustworthiness - not just leaderboard scores The takeaway is simple: Medical AI may ace tests today.     🚨 BREAKING: An extremely important lawsuit in the intersection of PRIVACY and AI was filed against Otter over its AI meeting assistant's lack of CONSENT from meeting participants. If you use meeting assistants, read this: Otter, the AI company being sued, offers an AI-powered service that, like many in this business niche, can transcribe and record the content of private conversations between its users and meeting participants (who are often NOT users and do not know that they are being recorded). Various privacy laws in the U.S. and beyond require that, in such cases, consent from meeting participants is obtained. The lawsuit specifically mentions: - The Electronic Communications Privacy Act; - The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; - The California Invasion of Privacy Act; - California’s Comprehensive Computer Data and Fraud Access Act; - The California common law torts of intrusion upon seclusion and conversion; - The California Unfair Competition Law; As more and more people use AI agents, AI meeting assistants, and all sorts of AI-powered tools to "improve productivity," privacy aspects are often forgotten (in yet another manifestation of AI exceptionalism). In this case, according to the lawsuit, the company has explicitly stated that it trains its AI models on recordings and transcriptions made using its meeting assistant. The main allegation is that Otter obtains consent only from its account holders but not from other meeting participants. It asks users to make sure other participants consent, shifting the privacy responsibility. As many of you know, this practice is common, and various AI companies shift the privacy responsibility to users, who often ignore (or don't know) what national and state laws actually require. So if you use meeting assistants, you should know that it's UNETHICAL and in many places also ILLEGAL to record or transcribe meeting participants without obtaining their consent.     We’ve all heard about AI’s potential to boost productivity. But what truly matters to me is whether it’s making work better for the people who show up every day. At Cisco, our People Intelligence team, in collaboration with IT, has been exploring this very topic, and the findings are fascinating. Here are five key insights from our research that leaders should take seriously: 1. Leaders are key to adoption. At Cisco, employees are 2x more likely to use AI if their direct leader uses it. 2. Generic AI training doesn’t work. Role-specific, practical training accelerates AI use. 3. Confidence gaps exist among senior leaders. Directors at Cisco often feel less confident with AI than mid-level employees, underscoring the need for tailored support at all levels. 4. Employee autonomy fuels adoption. Hybrid work environments are powerful accelerators for AI adoption, while mandates can hinder it. Employees who voluntarily go to the office are more likely to use AI, while those who are required to work on-site have lower adoption. 5. AI use is linked to employee well-being, but the relationship is complex, with both benefits and trade-offs that require thoughtful navigation. This is just the beginning.     AI is not failing because of bad ideas; it’s "failing" at enterprise scale because of two big gaps: 👉 Workforce Preparation 👉 Data Security for AI While I speak globally on both topics in depth, today I want to educate us on what it takes to secure data for AI—because 70–82% of AI projects pause or get cancelled at POC/MVP stage (source: #Gartner, #MIT). Why? One of the biggest reasons is a lack of readiness at the data layer. So let’s make it simple - there are 7 phases to securing data for AI—and each phase has direct business risk if ignored. 🔹 Phase 1: Data Sourcing Security - Validating the origin, ownership, and licensing rights of all ingested data. Why It Matters: You can’t build scalable AI with data you don’t own or can’t trace. 🔹 Phase 2: Data Infrastructure Security - Ensuring data warehouses, lakes, and pipelines that support your AI models are hardened and access-controlled. Why It Matters: Unsecured data environments are easy targets for bad actors making you exposed to data breaches, IP theft, and model poisoning. 🔹 Phase 3: Data In-Transit Security - Protecting data as it moves across internal or external systems, especially between cloud, APIs, and vendors. Why It Matters: Intercepted training data = compromised models. Think of it as shipping cash across town in an armored truck—or on a bicycle—your choice. 🔹 Phase 4: API Security for Foundational Models - Safeguarding the APIs you use to connect with LLMs and third-party GenAI platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.). Why It Matters: Unmonitored API calls can leak sensitive data into public models or expose internal IP. This isn’t just tech debt. It’s reputational and regulatory risk. 🔹 Phase 5: Foundational Model Protection - Defending your proprietary models and fine-tunes from external inference, theft, or malicious querying. Why It Matters: Prompt injection attacks are real. And your enterprise-trained model? It’s a business asset. You lock your office at night—do the same with your models. 🔹 Phase 6: Incident Response for AI Data Breaches - Having predefined protocols for breaches, hallucinations, or AI-generated harm—who’s notified, who investigates, how damage is mitigated. Why It Matters: AI-related incidents are happening. Legal needs response plans. Cyber needs escalation tiers. 🔹 Phase 7: CI/CD for Models (with Security Hooks) - Continuous integration and delivery pipelines for models, embedded with testing, governance, and version-control protocols. Getting your house in order is the foundation for delivering on any AI ambition. The MIT Technology Review — based on insights from 205 C-level executives and data leaders — lays it out clearly: 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Therefore, many firms are still stuck in pilots, not production. Changing that requires strong data foundations, scalable architectures, trusted partners, and a shift in how companies think about creating real value with AI. Because pilots are easy, BUT scaling AI across the enterprise is hard. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: ⬇️ 1. 95% 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 — 𝗯𝘂𝘁 76% 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 1–3 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀:   ➜ The gap between ambition and execution is huge. Scaling AI across the full business will define competitive advantage over the next 24 months. 2. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀: ➜ Without curated, accessible, and trusted data, no AI strategy can succeed — no matter how powerful the models are. 3. True differentiation will come from custom, domain-specific applications. 5.     In our new paper we ran an experiment at Procter and Gamble with 776 experienced professionals solving real business problems. We found that individuals randomly assiged to use AI did as well as a team of two without AI. And AI-augmented teams produced more exceptional solutions. The teams using AI were happier as well. Even more interesting: AI broke down professional silos. R&D people with AI produced more commercial work and commercial people with AI had more technical solutions. The standard model of "AI as productivity tool" may be too limiting. Today’s AI can function as a kind of teammate, offering better performance, expertise sharing, and even positive emotional experiences.     HUGE AI LEGAL NEWS! The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has published its much anticipated Opinion on AI and data protection. The opinion looks at 1) when and how AI models can be considered anonymous, 2) whether and how legitimate interest can be used as a legal basis for developing or using AI models, and 3) what happens if an AI model is developed using personal data that was processed unlawfully. It also considers the use of first and third-party data. The opinion also addresses the consequences of developing AI models with unlawfully processed personal data, an area of particular concern for both developers and users. The EDPB clarifies that supervisory authorities are empowered to impose corrective measures, including the deletion of unlawfully processed data, retraining of the model, or even requiring its destruction in severe cases. On the issue of anonymity, the opinion grapples with the question of whether AI models trained on personal data can ever fully transcend their origins to be considered anonymous. The EDPB highlights that merely asserting that an AI model does not process personal data is insufficient. Supervisory authorities (SAs) must assess claims of anonymity rigorously, considering whether personal data has been effectively anonymised in the model and whether risks such as re-identification or membership inference attacks have been mitigated. For AI developers, this means that claims of anonymity should be substantiated with evidence, including the implementation of technical and organisational measures to prevent re-identification. On legitimate interest as a legal basis for AI, the opinion offers detailed guidance for both development and deployment phases. Legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR requires meeting three cumulative conditions: pursuing a legitimate interest, demonstrating that processing is necessary to achieve that interest, and ensuring the processing does not override the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects. For third-party data, the opinion emphasises that the absence of a direct relationship with the data subjects necessitates stronger safeguards, including enhanced transparency, opt-out mechanisms, and robust risk assessments. The opinion’s findings stress that the balancing test under legitimate interest must consider the unique risks posed by AI. These include discriminatory outcomes, regurgitation of personal data by generative AI models, and the broader societal risks of misuse, such as through deepfakes or misinformation campaigns. The opinion also provides examples of mitigating measures that could tip the balance in favour of controllers, such as pseudonymisation, output filters, and voluntary transparency initiatives like model cards and annual reports. The implications for developers are significant: compliance failures in the development phase can render an entire AI system non-compliant, leading to legal and operational challenges.

How AI Can Help Address the Plastic Issue: Waste Sorting and Recycling: AI can enhance recycling processes by improving the accuracy and efficiency of waste sorting. Machine learning algorithms, combined with robotic systems, can identify and separate different types of plastic from other waste materials, increasing the volume of plastic that gets recycled. Plastic Detection in Oceans: AI-powered drones and satellite imaging can be used to detect plastic waste in oceans. By analyzing images with AI, we can better understand the scale of ocean plastic pollution and target cleanup efforts more effectively. Material Innovation: AI can accelerate the development of alternative, more sustainable materials by analyzing vast datasets of chemical compounds and predicting their properties. This can lead to the creation of biodegradable plastics or entirely new materials that have less environmental impact. Supply Chain Optimization: AI can help companies optimize their supply chains to reduce plastic use. By analyzing data on production, packaging, and transportation, AI can suggest ways to minimize plastic waste and encourage the use of sustainable alternatives. Education and Awareness: AI-driven platforms can be used to educate the public about the impacts of plastic pollution and encourage more sustainable behaviors.
