Visual Source Safe or Borland StarTeam. You checked out a file, and no one else could work on it. No concept of merge and branching in VSS, I believe, and even in StarTeam we weren't using branches for anything other than marking a release. CVS and SVN were a big upgrade for me, but I remember merge day being a huge deal. All build pipelines broken for at least half a day as everyone worked out the merge conflicts. Git with frequent pulls or fetches and fast, easy merges was such a welcome upgrade. It's a wonder we could get anything done back in the day.
Oh i have been in the v1 v2 phase back till 2019, I was in ninth grade, but since then life has been easier to maintain projects a LOT
