What matters most in parcel delivery. Speed? Reliability? Convenience? Cost? For much of the past decade, growth made these trade-offs easier. That era is ending. Parcel delivery is entering an efficiency regime. BCG’s 2025 Parcel Study finds that nine in ten shippers and carriers now rank cost reduction above speed or customer experience. As e-commerce growth slows, rising input costs, higher returns, and last mile complexity are compressing margins across global networks. The next decade will belong to carriers that redesign networks and commercial models around cost economics, restoring density through out of home delivery, integrated returns, and partnerships. Loh Rachel is a consulting project leader in Kuala Lumpur, six years into her career at BCG. This year she will be moving to Oslo as part of BCG’s Global Ambassador program, a one-year transfer designed to provide international experience. Ben Keneally is a managing director and partner in Sydney who first started working at BCG in 1993. Collaboration is a highly prized part of BCG’s culture. Even as the firm has grown to 33,000 staff in 90 cities, BCGers know that when they have an idea, need support, or could use some advice, there’s a colleague they can turn to. See for yourself in this conversation between Rachel and Ben, the first in an occasional series called “BCG Work Chat”. What advice would you give a colleague who was preparing for a new role on the other side of the world? Comment below. https://on.bcg.com/4ajLTip
