This was unbelievable. I use the app Otter.ai when I encounter a new story I want to record and save for when I'm preparing to teach a program. And if there's a particular feeling I want to capture, I'll randomly record a quick note. Well....today Otter wrote me (!) and asked if I wanted to see my 2026 predictions based on my recorded notes? OMG. What I read honestly brought tears to my eyes. Especially this comment, "Your deep commitment to reducing human suffering through mindfulness, combined with your proven ability to create empathy-building experiences, positions you to design and implement organization-wide cultural shifts rather than just delivering programs. Your 20-year teaching foundation, paired with your instinct to offer free programs during times of financial strain, signals a shift toward building accessible platforms that democratize emotional intelligence training." Sam Liang came to the DFJ offices in Menlo Park, California, from Google looking to become an entrepreneur. We had extra space at our office and had decided to put up a few entrepreneurs in residence. So we put up Sam. He told us he was creating a business that allowed phones to tag people as they moved around the world and would periodically leave "breadcrumbs" to keep track of them. His company, Alohar, sold successfully. In 2016, he came back with an ambitious (and admittedly crazy) idea: record and make all the conversations in the world AI-searchable. The result: Otter.ai. The very first speech-to-text transcription service that uses artificial intelligence to generate accurate and searchable transcripts from audio and video files. Every conversation can now be recorded and transcribed. All of that information stored can be accessed by AI. People and businesses benefit, but all history will be able to be discovered from all points of view. Sam's journey from entrepreneur in residence to successful exit to building something truly game-changing shows what happens when you give talented founders a chance.
