Security tooling keeps getting better. So why are teams still drowning in CVE alerts? Because we keep trying to fix security at the edges instead of fixing the foundations. This piece from Docker nails something I have been thinking about for a while. The shift left movement had the right instinct but the wrong execution. We pushed more work onto developers without giving them better defaults. More scanners, more alerts, more noise. The result is predictable. Security becomes background noise. Real risks get buried alongside issues that do not matter. Teams burn cycles debating severity scores instead of shipping. The fix is not asking developers to care more. It is making secure choices the obvious default. Docker Hardened Images represent exactly this kind of thinking. Smaller attack surface from day one. Fewer packages means fewer vulnerabilities means fewer alerts. Supply chain metadata baked in by default rather than bolted on later. Here is what I find most compelling. This is one of those rare cases where improving security directly improves developer experience. Smaller images build faster, pull faster, deploy faster. Less toil, better outcomes. We spent a decade optimizing for convenience with big generic base images. That made sense when containers were new. But those decisions compound into persistent security and operational drag.
