the territorial organisation of settlements in the geographical districts of Balıkesir, Bithynia
and Erithrea of Asia Minor, where the cultural and ekistics' heritage of Greek communities (19th-
20th centuries) is located. The article draws on material from the research program which is currently
under development. Presented are – especially for the Mudanya and Trigleia settlements:
A) The historical and geographical framework, B) The historical-cultural identity of each settlement
as a place-report, and C) The investigation of general and special characteristics of residential
heritage and their districts with regard to the categories of buildings (residences, public buildings,
temples), and the organisation of public spaces within the settlement.
It should be noted that, in the development of this subject the focus of the analysis regarding the issues of the current state of the cultural heritage at the referring country and the research of the institutional protection framework was given to the urban heritage of FYROM, analyzing it objectively as part of the built / anthropogenic environment of the area, where this is located today. At the level of this research, the investigation and the analysis of issues regarding the historical, ethnic identity of the cultural heritage were not considered critical.
This research, epistemologically moving in the field of spatial planning and regional development, strictly focused on logging issues of the current heritage for FYROM, distinction and classification, according to the criteria of its dynamic management, as well as adapting the framework of protecting and managing the heritage to already existing – European and international – respectively.
It is organized around five main axes which are differentiated to two reference levels, the European and the one of FYROM. These axes, which correspond to five chapters, are:
a) the theoretical approach of the “urban heritage” and “cultural heritage” concept, to the international and European area and the respective policies
b) The urban and cultural heritage of FYROM today
c) The institutional framework and the protection and management policies
d) the European perspective of FYROM as a determinant factor for the sustainable management of the urban and cultural heritage of the neighbouring country and finally
e) drawing conclusions and expressing positions for formatting individual scenarios.

The study of the transport network of the Ottoman Empire of this period is of interest, since it contributes to the approach and under-standing of the spatial phenomena related to the two interrelated phenomena: the European capitalist penetration to the Ottoman Empire and the Ottoman state's attempt to cope with the demands of the time, among others also by modernizing the transportation network of the empire.
Therefore, the approach of the Historic Centre of Korça is carried out by using the records and comments of the present institutional framework and of the management policies regarding its historical and architectural physiognomy. While the theoretical approaches of the modern city con-centrate on the recognition and the systemic determination of the devel-opmental features that compose the multiple urban planning, the study focuses on the functional standpoint of the Historic Centre, with parallel references to the economical factors that influence the evolution of the development mechanisms and the basic planning options.
Keywords: architectural heritage, urban planning, management policies, Historic Centre of Korça.
The second section which refers to the city of Serres during the years of Ottoman rule, provides information about the selection of the city by the central Ottoman government of the time, as prominent center of military and civilian operations, the population growth and composition - as consequence of the above policy/administrative choice - and its influential position in the wider region (eastern Macedonia, 15th-16th century). The urban planning of Serres during the period of Ottoman occupation is analyzed in the context of this article mainly in relation with the most famous monuments of the city which have survived from that period. The importance of the mosque Zincirli, its relationships and spatial dependencies with other prominent landmarks of that period in Serres, are examined with emphasis.
The third section of the article, dedicated to the Zincirli mosque in Serres, goes through the detailed architectural description of the monument, the attempt to make a comparative dating based on its architectural character and its construction elements and the description of its uses, diachronically.
The term of Europeanisation refers to a number of patterns concerning the process of adopting the EU features and among others the tools of social, economic and urban policies that apply to cities towards a European profile.
Projects such as URBAN, and URBACT and the institution of European Capital of Culture are analyzed in the context of their proposals, objectives and perspectives. Further reference to the European practices reveals the importance of the urban networks that are created among cities in order for their integration.
Within this framework, the cities of Balkans consist of areas of interest due to their multifaceted character with historical, political, economic and cultural dimensions. Through specific examples of Balkan cities it is attempted an exploration of their actions and planning processes that refer to public sustainability, social participation and urban regeneration. With a reference to Balkan programmes and projects, such as Balkan Mediterranean, are explored the potential of strategic planning and implementation of actions, that comply with the particular needs and priorities of Balkan cities.
In this point a question arises concerning the impact of local identity and its prevalence over any European’s. It remains to be seen whether the existing urban networks foster initiatives of trans-European networks of cooperation and prosperity among European regions, taking into account local characteristics and the specific identity of the Balkan area.
views. In the era of globalization and information society, the protection and promotion of the urban image needs to be integrated into individual policies for economic, social and cultural development and in conjunction with the objectives of spatial planning for quality of space. On theoretical level are analyzed the economic, social and environmental aspects of a region that affect the promotion of the urban identity and are related to the enhancement of the image of a place. Socio-economic conditions, quality of life, historical tradition and aesthetic values directly
affect the cultural environment as an extension of the global environmental system. Modern urban policies include practices for the protection and promotion of urban assets through innovative applications, fulfilling technological requirements. The area of the SE Europe and
especially the Balkans, despite the differences in historical, social and architectural level, display
the image of a unified cultural space, without special identity differences. This paper attempts an exploration of contemporary urban policies that are related to the image of the city as a tool in shaping its urban identity and urban planning. Specific reference area is the center of Thessaloniki, a city of Greek territory with a metropolitan character in the area of the Balkans, a city with overall dynamic growth, characterized by its historical and cultural heritage, its environmental quality and social and urban infrastructure, while retaining its particular identity.
The objective is the evaluation / assessment of their application in planning as an anticipated public benefit contributing to the promotion of the urban area in SE Europe.
The methodology approach which was chosen is consisted of bibliography and in situ research and analysis, both of which have been taking place in the framework of a research program entitled “Cultural and ekistics heritage of the Greek communities in Asia Minor”.
A thorough examination is followed in the evaluation of the historic relations and ties, in order to enhance tradition and redefine the symbiosis of the dualism of greek origin ekistics heritage and tourism development in the turkish territories.
During the investigation, a question was raised, regarding the way in which a monumental housing settlement could adapt to current conditions that have brought about a kind of conversion in the current identity of the communities.
Their crucial historical and cultural role as the holdover of collective memory and architectural heritage, establish them into places of great significance, worth being preserved and enhanced throughout the years.
In this context, a series of proposals are suggested, targeting on the enhancement and protection of their cultural image, along with their historical and architectural identity.
19th century until the early 20th century.
Key words: spatial network, rural mountainous settlements, regions of Argiroupoli and Trebizond
of its historical environment. However, the country has endured many political and economical alterations that have influenced the qualitative character of the monumental architecture, as well as the regional development of historical communities.
Τhis paper deals with the Greek’s cultural heritage in Turkey today, targeting on the enhancement of strategic solutions that concern the symbiosis of the dualism of greek origin ekistics heritage and tourism development in the turkish territories. The methodology
approach is achieved through bibliography and in situ research and analysis that have taken place during a scientific research program concerning the Greek’s cultural presence in Asia Minor (17th- 20th centuries). In addition to that, a thorough examination is followed in the
evaluation of the existing turkish and international institutional framework, regarding the protection of the Greek’s ekistics and monumental heritage in Turkey.
In this context, a series of strategic measures is proposed in order to preserve and enhance the cultural value and aesthetics of the Greek’s heritage in Turkey today. The governmental administration and international legislation, the elimination of bureaucratic issues, the promotion of strategic planning on both urban and architectural level, as well as the encouragement of the interstate relations between Turkey and Greece, are some of the potential solutions highly underlined in this paper.
This is an International Symposium with an invitation to colleagues from the Balkans and Europe and domestic scientists, researchers and educators at universities and research institutes. Indicatively, it is reported that in the realization of the Symposium will participate colleagues – except from the University of Macedonia – from the Greek side, from the University of Ioannina, the Democritus University of Thrace, the Aegean University, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Harokopio University/ Athens etc., as well as by a number of academic institutions of the countries of the Balkans and the rest of Europe.
As an indication, the following (institutions) are mentioned: University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski", Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism – Bucharest, Turnu Severin College of the University of Craiova, Istanbul Esenyurt Üniversitesi-Department of Architecture - Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, CNRS, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften - Institut fόr Mittelalterforschung Abteilung Byzanzforschung - Wien, University of Zagreb - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Nis - Serbia, Albanian Fund for Monuments FSHM.
This issue concerning "culture" and "residential area" becomes timely both in local (national) as well as in international literature/bibliography, due to the new reality being formed in Southeastern Europe and especially the Balkans. With the completion of the centennial (last year) of the signing of the Treaty of Bucharest and the configuration - following it - of the "map" of the Balkans, this matter gains a special scientific historical-geographical – and not only – weight.
An integrated plan for sustainable urban development includes a system of interrelated actions which aims to achieve long-term improvement for the economic, physical, social and environmental conditions in an area, in this study, the city of Florina. The vision of such a plan could be made possible only through understanding the strengths and the weaknesses of the town in the area, attempting to highlight them or, in case of weaknesses, to face them.
Development programs within the European Union can contribute to the preserving of the wealth of natural and cultural heritage, the exploitation of urban water resources, the management of alternative energy and the development of complete proposals for urban regeneration.
The adverse climatic conditions, the lack of transport hubs, in relation to unemployment, declining population and the influx of immigrants, match to a peculiar isolation, which previously may have worked as an element of conservation of the special cultural identity of Florina, but today, acts as a brake on the road of sustainable urban development.
In this article are presented issues concerning the position and the integration of the graduates of higher education institutions in the modern working environment in which every employee is not treated as a unit of work, but as a result of production unit. A unit assessed by its contribution to the success of concrete goals. Questions like: “What the graduate «must» do and which is the role of the higher education institution in the process of recruiting? How to respond to current job requirements?” seek answers within this article. The article concludes with the statement that the possibility of claiming the effective employment of graduates, should interest, actually, the University. The fact of ensuring employability honors, above all, the University both in society and the educational community, creating, at the same time, a positive attitude of the students towards their studies.
