Beat Signer is Professor of Computer Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium and director of the Web and Information System Engineering (WISE) laboratory. He studied Computer Science at ETH Zurich and obtained a PhD in Computer Science from ETH Zurich.
CURRENT RESEARCH
With his research group, Beat is investigating cross-media information spaces and architectures (CISA), cross-media technology, interactive paper and augmented reality solutions, dynamic data physicalisation and tangible holograms as well as multimodal, multi-touch interaction frameworks and hybrid positioning solutions. Thereby, they are coming up with new document formats for representing information across different types of media as well as fluid user interfaces for interacting with the resulting cross-media information spaces. A significant part of the research is based on extensions and applications of the resource-selector-link (RSL) hypermedia metamodel.

As part of the European Paper++ and PaperWorks projects, Beat Signer has developed the interactive paper (iPaper) framework for integrating paper and digital services and information. Different solutions for innovative forms of interactive paper document publishing have been realised and the iPaper framework has been applied in a variety of applications including PaperPoint, EdFest, Generosa Enterprise, the Lost Cosmonaut, Print-n-Link, PaperProof and other solutions. Based on the experience that he has gained from realising various interactive paper applications, he is currently investigating general design patterns and paper widgets for the new type of paper-digital user interfaces.
