This case study promotes analysis through a brief investigation into the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the operation of a multinational corporation as evidenced by Google, Inc. The study focuses on a transnational company in order to observe the impact of CSR practice on a global level. The study will present implications of CSR for corporate management, corporate employees, state regulators, shareholders, and customers in general. In addition, the study will discuss consequences of poor CSR compliance for a multinational corporation. Questions for analysis include implications of CSR, employee retention, development of corporate culture, and evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of different CSR approaches. In an online forum at a higher education institution in South Africa, interventions from management in order to moderate discussions, result in antagonism and the smothering of dissident discourse. Critical poststructuralist theory, the model of communicative democratic discourse as held by Iris Marion Young, and the tenets of ideal speech as held by Jürgen Habermas, inform the study while it investigates how the internal and external moderation of the forum limit and terminate essential discourse which could be instrumental in the critical construction of meaning and the exercise of freedom of speech. This submission summarises some of the research conducted at the Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation at UNSW Sydney, which may assist the Commission in exploring issues relating to technology and human rights. We are aware that some of the research referred in our paper may relate to very specific topics, as they were not originally written for this paper. Nonetheless, we hope our research will aid the Commission in exploring issues relating to technology and human rights, particularly in the areas of social media regulations and AI-informed decision making. Overall, we are grateful for the opportunity to present our views and hope this paper will help the Commission in completing his final report.

My chapter explores what I call the vernacular resistance to the linguistic policies of the Franco dictatorship, i.e. how the Catalan, Basque and Galician linguistic communities responded to widespread repression of languages other than Spanish. The chapter contextualizes Franco’s opposition to the official use of the vernacular languages, and studies the different phases of the dictatorship’s language policies: from the very harsh repression during the war and the immediate post-war years, the slow recovery of the vernacular publishing industry in the 1950s, over the major shift constituted by the Plan for Economic Stabilization in 1959—a shift from an ideological rule to a technocratic one—to the cooption and recognition of the regional languages in the 1970s. The study takes a comparative approach: although it studies the cases of Catalan, Basque and Galician separately, paying attention to the specificities of each linguistic community, it also shows the similarities in the strategies of resistance and proliferation. Focusing on the shifting position of the vernacular languages throughout the dictatorship years, the chapter concludes that it was a result of changing internal power dynamics of the dictatorial regime, international pressure and, above all, a consistent and diverse language resistance on behalf of the vernacular linguistic communities.
