This book examines the continuities and substantial transformations in Greek foreign policy before the beginning and during the unfolding of the economic crisis. Although up until now, significant attention has been cast on the rise of the neo-Nazi movement, the abuses and dysfunctions of the Greek economy, and the immense social ramifications of unemployment, less is understood about the impact on Greek diplomacy and foreign policy. This collective work not only attempts to delineate future trends in Greek foreign policy, but also seeks to explore the current events that resemble more a Greek tragedy than the systemic challenges that every nation has to face. On 22 January, High Court judge Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou was elected as Greece’s first woman President with 261 votes in favour in a 300-member Parliament – far exceeding the 200 votes the constitution requires. In late April, the government took a tough stance on cross border immigration from Turkey culminating in a standoff at the borders. The Moria refugee camp in the island of Lesbos, Europe’s largest refugee camp with over 13,000 migrants, was burned to the ground and European countries such as Germany took in many of the displaced people. During the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, Greece suffered relatively few casualties, but faced severe economic repercussions since tourism – one of Greece’s most important economic sectors – dwindled as a result of travel restrictions. In the summer, Greece secured €70 billion in much-needed funding from the European Union (EU) rescue fund. In October, the vast majority of the leadership of GoldenDawn/ChrysiAvgi (GD), including all of the former MPs, were convicted of forming a criminal organization.Later in the year,Greece experienced a much deadlier second wave of the pandemic and reintroduced a full lockdown in November.The first vaccinations began at the end of 2020 offering a glimmer of hope for 2021.

Σε αντιπαράθεση με διαφωνούντα αναγνώστη του, ο κ. Μπαϋρακτάρης αναπαράγει πλήθος στοιχείων παλαιοτέρων δημοσιεύσεών μου και συζητήσεών μας, πιστά ακολουθώντας την ερμηνευτική προσέγγιση και το πρότυπο ιστορικής-πολιτισμικής σύνθεσης, τα οποία έχω εισαγάγει. Και έτσι, πολύ ορθά καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι σήμερα ανήκει εξολοκλήρου στην Τουρκία η πολιτισμική κληρονομιά της Εφέσου - αρχικά γνωστής ως Άπασα χάρη σε χιττιτικά κείμενα της 2ης χιλιετίας τα οποία αγνοούνται ολότελα από την αμόρφωτη, άξεστη, περιθωριακή και ρατσιστική ψευδο-πανεπιστημιακή ελίτ της Ελλάδας.

This paper deals with the European Parliament (EP) elections in Cyprus. In the first section, we present the Cyprus crisis. In the second section we portray Cyprus’ route to EU accession, as well as the political attitudes and expectations toward that accession. In the third section, we examine the political milieu surrounding the June 2004 EP elections. In the fourth section the political campaign is presented. Finally, we briefly describe the election’s results. The post elections discourse in Cyprus, framed by the horse-race, masks the actual story of the EP campaign in Cyprus, which is the challenge that the “pro-anti Plan” cleavage poses to the “right-left” cleavage. In the post-referendum era the party system was given the opportunity for realignment, and the EP campaign was the critical incident for this to happen. However, what happened instead was that the party system absorbed the pressures created by the referendum without extensive restructuring occurring.

Στην ανάρτησή του αυτή, ο κ. Μπαϋρακτάρης αναδημοσιεύει την συζήτησή του με τον καθ. Δημήτρη Κιτσίκη (2/6/1935-28/8/2021) και δύο άλλους συνομιλητές στο μπλογκ του πρόσφατα μεταστάντος καθηγητή. Μεταφέρει πληροφορίες που του είχα δώσει αναφορικά με την πολιτική ζωή της Τουρκίας, παρουσιάζει μία ερμηνευτική προσέγγιση σε ιερά κείμενα και πρότυπο κατανόησής τους που έχω εφαρμόσει σε άρθρα και ομιλίες μου, και αναφέρεται σε μένα, καθώς και φίλους και συνεργάτες που είχα και έχω στην Τουρκία.

Δεν είναι καθόλου υπερβολικός ο χαρακτηρισμός του κ. Μπαϋρακτάρη για την πρώην πρωθυπουργό της Τουρκίας ως "κα Νεοπλουτίδου". Γνωρίζω πολύ καλά ότι, όταν προήχθη από λέκτορας σε καθηγήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Ιστάνμπουλ, όπου εργαζόταν στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980, αγόρασε με τον σύζυγό της ένα ιδιωτικό αυτοκίνητο Mercedes 200 και το οδήγησε κατ' ευθείαν στο πανεπιστήμιό της για να την δουν οι συνάδελφοί της. Το ίδιο έκανε και την επόμενη μέρα το πρωΐ. Όμως τότε, κάποιος παρατηρητικός συνάδελφός της πρόσεξε ότι η 'χαμηλού επιπέδου' πινακίδα είχε αλλαχθεί και το ίδιο αυτοκινητο 'εμφανιζόταν' πλέον ως Mercedes 300!!!!

This interview was conducted as part of the research program “The Challenge of Worldliness to Contemporary Christianity: Orthodox Christian Perspectives in Dialogue with Western Christianity” (University of Erfurt, project leader: Prof. Vasilios N. Makrides).

As Therasiotes – residents of Therasia, a sparsely populated island sitting to the west of the globally iconic tourist destination of Santorini – engage with their landscape, they are haunted by a sense of stillness, which contrasts with Santorini’s reverberating modernity. By combining text with photographic imagery, this essay explores how Therasiotes experience quietness and its perceived antithesis, modernity, as well as the ways in which both are entangled in conflicting dynamics of pleasure and aversion, a condition invoking Derrida’s discussion of Plato’s pharmakon, with its inherent vacillation between the categories of cure and poison. The article examines peoples’ material practices and modes of looking in order to understand how they experience time and place and how they rework the island’s position in national and global hierarchies of value. It also proposes a peripatetic narrative structure that mirrors my own physical movements on the island in pursuit of photos and thus explores the ethnographic role of photography as a narrative strategy, an object of study and a research method.

Στο κείμενό του αυτό, το οποίο αποτελεί online διάλογο και ανταλλαγή σχολίων με άλλο Ρωμιό blogger, ο κ. Μπαϋρακτάρης αναλύει την νεώτερη Ιστορία των Ρωμιών με βάση την δική μου επιστημονική μεθοδολογία και όπως εγώ έχω επανειλημμένα χρησιμοποιήσει αυτή την προσέγγιση και αυτό το πρότυπο για να παρουσιάσω πόσο κίβδηλα είναι όλα τα νεώτερα ψευδο-έθνη και ψευδο-κράτη, τα οποία προέκυψαν από την κακουργηματική αποικιοκρατία, από την απάνθρωπη διαστροφή της δυτικο-ευρωπαϊκής Αναγέννησης’, του ‘Κλασικισμού’ και του ‘Διαφωτισμού’, και από τον ειδεχθή και αποτρόπαιο κατακερματισμό της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, της Ιρανικής Αυτοκρατορίας Κατζάρ, της Μογγολικής (Μουγάλ ή Γκορκανιάν) Αυτοκρατορίας της Νότιας Ασίας (των ‘Ινδιών’), καθώς και της Μαύρης Ηπείρου.
Ο κ. Μπαϋρακτάρης αναφέρεται σε πολλές στιγμές του μικρασιατικού οικογενειακού παρελθόντος του, αλλά τέτοιες αφηγήσεις δεν έχουν τίποτα το σπάνιο και μοναδικό. Αποτελούν κοινές εμπειρίες εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων οικογενειών Μικρασιατών, Καππαδοκών και Ποντίων, οι οποίες απηνώς καταδιώχθηκαν στο εγκληματικό και ρατσιστικό ψευδο-κράτος ‘Ελλάδα’ πολύ περισσότερο από όσο στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία και στην Τουρκία. Γενοκτονίες, και μάλιστα πολλών και διαφορετικών εθνών, συνέβησαν στο απάνθρωπο νοτιο-βαλκανικό παρασκεύασμα των Αγγλογάλλων σατανιστών και όχι στην Ανατολία.
