"A pug is a dog that we call a pug. And I’ll love them no matter what they may end up looking like 10, 20, or 30 years from now. For their sake, I hope they’re as healthy as they deserve to be."

One last thing: This doesn't mean that mutations aren't important to study or report on. And even in best case scenario, we may need to update vaccines down the line to account for evolution anyway. Just important to keep the public accurately informed without unduly scaring

These newer variants are of more concern, as I've reported, but have to consider them in context. Cases are dropping sharply, and vaccination remains steady. So I think we have to preface ongoing reporting on variants with real possibility they won't change pandemic trajectory

Midway through the pandemic, I was generally critical of "mutation" news. Some study would purport to show a mutation that could lead to meaningful change in pandemic dynamics, but it never came to pass. 1/2

That said, we should also be clear that since vaxes will likely significantly reduce transmission, mask-wearing will probably have much less significant effect on the course of the pandemic as time goes on. Not going to get mad if ppl abandon them by summertime w/ high coverage

The messaging should be clearer about why masking may be needed until vax coverage is high. But also, I don't think the ppl who swear they'll never get vaxxed because they'll still be asked to wear masks are serious—they'll either get the vaccine and be pouty or not.

I agree w/ the general argument about being too vaccine-pessimistic. But in my personal experience, the people I most see making this specific argument are those who have dismissed the seriousness of this pandemic from the start, so not inclined to take them in good faith.

Yes, we are uncertain about how much vaccines will cut transmission. Yes, they probably will and here’s why. Enough complaining about how we discuss vaccines. The public can understand the nuances. My latest for the :

There are specifics we still have to nail down (How could variants affect efficacy, etc?). But the guiding message from here on should be: Vaxes will help protect you from severe illness and limit transmission
