Organization: Archive Team

Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.

History is littered with hundreds of conflicts over the future of a community, group, location or business that were "resolved" when one of the parties stepped ahead and destroyed what was there. With the original point of contention destroyed, the debates would fall to the wayside. Archive Team believes that by duplicated condemned data, the conversation and debate can continue, as well as the richness and insight gained by keeping the materials. Our projects have ranged in size from a single volunteer downloading the data to a small-but-critical site, to over 100 volunteers stepping forward to acquire terabytes of user-created data to save for future generations.

The main site for Archive Team is at archiveteam.org and contains up to the date information on various projects, manifestos, plans and walkthroughs.

This collection contains the output of many Archive Team projects, both ongoing and completed. Thanks to the generous providing of disk space by the Internet Archive, multi-terabyte datasets can be made available, as well as in use by the Wayback Machine, providing a path back to lost websites and work.

Our collection has grown to the point of having sub-collections for the type of data we acquire. If you are seeking to browse the contents of these collections, the Wayback Machine is the best first stop. Otherwise, you are free to dig into the stacks to see what you may find.

The Archive Team Panic Downloads are full pulldowns of currently extant websites, meant to serve as emergency backups for needed sites that are in danger of closing, or which will be missed dearly if suddenly lost due to hard drive crashes or server failures.

welfare state during the twentieth century: the “Rava Committee”. It conducts a first time prosopographical study of its members aiming to analyse the ideas and proposals of social reform as well as the agents. The article begins by bringing to light the educational background of the components of the Committee, highlighting the central role of statistical knowledge. Then, it explores its professional composition, which excludes the subaltern classes, as well as the political culture of the members. Finally, the prosopography shows the features of a reform area which crosses traditional political organizations. It is a sort of irregular cloud unified by the aim to address the social question with reforms and therefore to prevent the fracture of society.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, administrative science circulated from the Germ... more During the second half of the nineteenth century, administrative science circulated from the German cultural space to Italy, where it met a national conception of administration. Considered as an autonomous science that focuses on state interventions in society to improve the distribution of wealth, it became a university discipline in 1875. It was nonetheless removed in 1935 after losing its scientific autonomy when it evolved to the study of state bureaucracy. This article details the social and political conditions of this successive institutionalization and deinstitutionalization through fine-scale observations of jurist Guido Cavaglieri’s trajectory, who represents an anomaly in regard to the norms that regulate administrative science. He is at the same time an indicator that reveals the tensions inside the discipline and its relationships with politics.

There is broad consensus that Italian Fascism addressed the middle classes – through its rhetoric... more There is broad consensus that Italian Fascism addressed the middle classes – through its rhetoric, privileged policies of social protection and trade union organization – with a view to consolidating a loyal area in society. On the contrary, what is less widely known is that appearance of the middle classes dates back to the period between the end of the nineteenth century and the Great war. To shed light on this “invention”, the chapter carries out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the emergence of a discourse on the middle classes prior to the First World War. It then outlines the biography of Italy’s most intense propagandist for the middle classes, Vincenzo Magaldi, and describes the International Institute for the Study of the Middle Classes in which he operated. The next section focuses on the Commission for post-war problems established in 1918 that was the first to incorporate the middle classes into a proposal for “global” reform of social legislation. Finally, the article discusses the mobilization of the middle classes at the dawn of the Fascist era.

It begins by retracing the most pervasive, medium- and long-term interventions of French colonial power in Algerian society: the introduction of capitalism and the internment of civilians in the centres de regroupement. Next, it outlines the social subjects studied by the young agrégé of philosophy and his representation of labour. Subsequent sections deal with shifts in the public stance of Bourdieu regarding the revolutionary propensity of these people. On this tricky testing ground, Bourdieu engaged with and critically confronted the ideas of Germaine Tillion and Frantz Fanon. His position is reviewed from a historical-philological approach in order to set the texts in their temporal and spatial contexts, establish parallels and/or divergences, and verify the effects such comparisons produced. The conclusions emphasize the richness and originality of Bourdieu’s inquiries given the era in which they were made and highlight, in light of the recent global reorientation of labour history, some of the vital viewpoints expressed on the origins of capitalism in the colony.

Especially, this practice research restores historical depth to the Administrative Science which knowledge about the social reform; it shows the cooperation among different political cultures in the attempt to face the «social question»; it highlights a constellation of political and academics élites, of cultural reviews, of city and of institutions of the State that give consistence to a reforming space wrecked with relationships between the '80s of the ‘800 and the First Great War. In the conclusions, the article sustains that the «social question» qualifies as one among the deepest faults that swallow the liberal State.

La dottrina giuridica si è sempre interrogata su quale debba essere il proprio oggetto e, di cons... more La dottrina giuridica si è sempre interrogata su quale debba essere il proprio oggetto e, di conseguenza, su quale ruolo assumere nella società e nelle istituzioni che essa esprime. Si tratta di una riflessione che in prima istanza coinvolge soprattutto gli studiosi dei poteri pubblici, e che nel contesto italiano costituisce una costante quasi formalizzata a partire, quanto meno, dal magistero di Vittorio Emanuele Orlando (1860-1952), cui si è soliti attribuire la fondazione di una moderna e autorevole scuola giuspubblicistica. È naturale, dunque, tornare a Orlando, specie nel momento presente, nel quale il dibattito sul metodo del diritto pubblico pare intrecciarsi a una diffusa consapevolezza sulla necessità di rispondere alle tante e profonde trasformazioni economiche e scientifico-tecnologiche che si sono affermate nel passaggio da un secolo all'altro. Anche il grande giurista siciliano, del resto, aveva vissuto una temperie analoga. Di qui deriva il rinnovato interesse per la sua poliedrica figura, non tanto allo scopo di rievocarne in modo anacronisti-co le teorie o gli insegnamenti: la finalità è capire se in quell'importante e cruciale itinerario di pensiero si possano scorgere le tracce per ritrovare, anche oggi, la via di una nuova spinta propulsiva, coordinata con le istanze del presente. I saggi raccolti in questo volume hanno accettato la sfida di intraprendere una simile ricerca, cercando di rispondere ad alcuni quesiti fondamentali: qual è lo spazio del diritto nell'arena pubblica? In che cosa si contraddistingue l'approccio del giurista pubblicista? Può essere utile, tale prospettiva, al dialogo che il diritto deve tenere con le scienze attualmente più influenti? Le mutazioni dello scenario accademico italiano sono davvero sinergiche rispetto a questa esigenza?

to historical truth. Based on lengthy research carried out in Piaggio’s
historical archives and on an interdisciplinary approach, this volume aims
to fill this gap. It shows how the Vespa took techniques from the most
advanced aeronautical industries in the world, adapting and hybridizing
them in an original way, and how the company disseminated its models
in the transnational social space.

Uno storico affermato e un giovane studioso intessono insieme un dialogo su uno dei grandi proble... more Uno storico affermato e un giovane studioso intessono insieme un dialogo su uno dei grandi problemi del Novecento: l'antifascismo. Convinti che questo tema sia ancora oggi un oggetto di ricerca ampiamente da esplorare, ne ripercorrono la storia sotto una nuova luce: da capitolo nazionale l'antifascismo viene collocato in una cornice europea e da fenomeno circoscritto esclusivamente agli anni trenta viene catapultato in uno scenario di lunga durata, valutandone il contributo alla definizione della democrazia fino al crepuscolo del secolo. Nello stesso tempo, il dialogo prende spunto dall'antifascismo per aprire un confronto serrato sulle condizioni di possibilità che spiegano la genesi delle idee di uno storico, dei suoi quadri mentali e delle sue prese di posizione nel campo scientifico. Cimentandosi criticamente con i modelli proposti dalla microstoria e dall'ego-histoire, il volume delinea così il contorno originale di una storia sociale della storiografia di cui si offre un concreto esempio.

Si apre con un lungo e denso saggio di Grego-rio Sorgonà, La proposta storiografica di Franco De Felice (pp. 11-195), la più pon-derata ricostruzione della biografia scienti-fica dello storico, in cui Sorgonà con gran-de acribia intreccia tre diversi campi di intervento nella vita pubblica di De Fe-lice: i corsi universitari, l'attività edito-riale presso la casa editrice De Donato, l'impegno nell'Istituto Gramsci. L'autore ha utilizzato tre depositi documentari: il fondo privato De Felice presso la Fonda-zione Istituto Gramsci, le carte dell'edito-re De Donato, l'archivio della Fondazione Gramsci che testimonia il suo apporto alla vita della sezione storica. La parte centrale dell'Annale ospi-ta invece un capitolo di Ermanno Tavia-ni "Nella 'guerra di movimento'. Gramsci e Togliatti nella storiografia di Franco De Felice", pp. 199-239) che ha la funzione più specifica di introdurre la terza parte, dove trova spazio un'antologia degli scrit-ti di De Felice. Taviani approfondisce la funzione prismatica di Gramsci e Togliat-ti attraverso i quali De Felice ha guarda-to la storia nazionale in modo originale ri-spetto alla stessa storiografia comunista.
