🐔 Exploring higher-welfare farming in the Netherlands Last week, Compassion in World Farming organised study tours for company delegates from Thailand, Belgium, Japan, and the Netherlands to experience higher-welfare broiler farming first-hand. ▪️ Participants visited HatchTech Incubation Technology headquarters, where the Hubbard and HatchTech teams shared insights on higher-welfare broiler production, regulations, and market trends. ▪️ The programme also included a visit to Kip van de Boer, Beter Leven 1 Star farm and a supermarket stop, where participants saw higher-welfare products displayed on the shelves. ▪️ The following day, the tour continued at Windstreek Farm, where farmer Robert Nijkamp showcased his innovative system that meets Beter Leven 1 Star standards and shared valuable first-hand insights in an open and engaging discussion with participants. The first seeds for a more sustainable food production in Brazil have been planted. 🌱 Through the Cultiva Project, ProVeg Brasil is supporting a family‑farmer in the state of Paraná (southern Brazil) to transition from farming animals to agroforestry. This means instead of cattle farming, the farmer will grow diverse crops such as papaya, pumpkin, watermelon, coffee and yerba mate. The transition plan was developed in direct collaboration between ProVeg Brasil and the producer, with key contributions from the Federation of Rural Workers and Family Farmers of Paraná and the Rural Workers' Union of Ortigueira. The project provides free technical support to create a sustainable, profitable, and fair food system. As Gisiliana Oliveira, agroecologist and technical manager of Cultiva, explains: “Crop production is expected to generate more than ten times the income of animal production in the first year of the transition.” The first seedlings are already in the ground, marking the start of a new cycle for people, animals, and the planet. 🌎 Congrats to our colleagues from ProVeg Brazil for kicking off such an important project! As promised, here’s a short video showcasing the freshwater fish farming site I manage in Lamendora Village, Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Through this video, I’d like to share an overview of the environment, pond setup, and cultivation process that support the production of catfish and various other freshwater fish species that continue to grow and develop. Each pond represents hard work, dedication, and a vision to build a sustainable and collaborative freshwater aquaculture ecosystem in our region. 🐄 Ganadería regenerativa: proof that regeneration pays off. Regenerative livestock farming in Spain is no longer an experiment — it’s scaling. According to Plataforma Tierra (5 Sep 2025), around 400 farms across multiple Spanish regions are already applying regenerative grazing practices. Their results are measurable: Soil organic matter increased by 3–7 % within just a few years. Water infiltration improved by up to 30 %, thanks to better ground cover and restored vegetation. And crucially — these farms report lower costs and higher profitability (“reduce los costes y aumenta la rentabilidad”). This combination of ecological restoration, productive stability, and economic return is what makes regenerative livestock farming a quiet revolution — one that’s now moving beyond the pioneer phase and spreading “por todo el país.” Even policies are catching up. Selected from national winners across five countries, the Jonsson brothers exemplify what is possible when innovation meets environmental responsibility. Operating Ogestad Estate and Hyllela Farm, they have transformed large-scale dairy farming through groundbreaking measures to protect the Baltic Sea, including: ✅ Ten constructed wetlands and over 2 km of two-stage ditches to filter nutrient runoff and boost biodiversity ✅ Year-round green cover to prevent erosion and nutrient leaching ✅ Biochar filter ditches to capture phosphorus and improve water quality ✅ Nitrogen-fixing plants and bacteria to reduce mineral fertilizer use ✅ A unique irrigation system that pumps nutrient-rich bottom water from a nearby bay—removing over 1,000 kg of nitrogen and 100 kg of phosphorus annually while fertilizing crops and improving oxygen levels in the bay This approach, developed in collaboration with researchers, local authorities, and their catchment officer, demonstrates how science-based solutions can scale impact. Happy Weekend Aquaculture Leaders. Yesterday we were able to arrive at a concluding statement that: When you invest in your team’s growth, welfare, and purpose, you build not just a workforce, you build a family that powers your farm to success. I'll add 2 other principles that helps to retain talent or skilled workers on Aquaculture organizations. 4. Build a Sense of Purpose. Let your talent see that aquaculture is not just a job; it’s a mission, feeding people, sustaining livelihoods, and driving food security. When your workers can see this, they think selflessly and think about meeting needs. Consistently share your farm vision. Show them the impact of their work, in fact, amplify it (for example you can say, “This harvest we just concluded has the potential of feeding 500 families this month and it's because of their hard work”). Recognize them as part of something bigger than a paycheck. Purpose keeps people committed when challenges arise. 5. Introduce Growth and Leadership Opportunities No one wants to stay in a role where there’s no growth. Many farm owners are insecure and think talents leave when they expose them to growth opportunities. But as staff advance, your farm advances. Always ensure you - Promote from within. - Rotate staff into new responsibilities (e.g., pond to hatchery, feeding to data logging). - Let them lead small projects on the farm. This builds leadership, pride, and a sense of belonging. Just like I mentioned yesterday retention is not about locking people in; it’s about creating an environment they don’t want to leave.
