That’s the reality facing the US job market as September 2025 draws to a close. The federal government, under unprecedented executive orders, is not only directing agencies to prepare for a shutdown but is requiring “Reduction-in-Force” strategies — permanent layoffs that go far beyond past practices of temporary furloughs. As of this summer, estimates show roughly 200,000 federal jobs, many in technology and support roles, have already been lost this year, with more poised to be affected as shutdown plans advance. Private tech companies are hardly immune. So far in 2025, more than 22,000 tech workers have been laid off from major firms just through August, on top of the 150,000 cuts that defined last year’s reset of the industry. Added to these are hiring freezes, cutbacks in government contracts, and delays in critical projects across cybersecurity, automation, and digital services. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘇𝘇𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴: Federal layoffs have outpaced all other sectors this quarter, making public sector IT positions some of the most precarious in the country. Tech giants like Oracle and Microsoft have quietly continued rolling layoffs across US offices, with smaller and midsize tech firms feeling the squeeze from lost government work and economic headwinds. Uncertainty is now influencing company hiring plans and candidate decisions across the board.
