Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment (Revised 10th Anniv 2nd Edition) Revised, 10th Anniv., 2nd Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars (96)

In spite of the double burden of racial and gender discrimination, African-American women have developed a rich intellectual tradition that is not widely known. In Black Feminist Thought, Patricia Hill Collins explores the words and ideas of Black feminist intellectuals as well as those African-American women outside academe. She provides an interpretive framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, bell hooks, Alice Walker, and Audre Lorde. The result is a superbly crafted book that provides the first synthetic overview of Black feminist thought.

LOVE
I read this through the eyes of Jesus Christ, from the perspective of a concerned brother who wants to help any way he can. I LOVE Patricia Hill Collins and pray things have gotten much better since the year 2000. During times of war, the ones who suffer the most are women and children. So much easier without racial hate groups, political hate groups, economic hate groups and religious hate groups. We can do all things through Christ Jesus. That would shut down all hate groups for any reason at all, since we now know that is the root of all terrorism. Police protection for all Black Females of all ages would be closer to heaven on Earth. To put restraining orders on every single hate group member in your local area...they are not even allowed to go near anyone at all...and they are ALWAYS up to no good. The author is able to display how complex oppression is while somehow making it more understandable. Somehow, the world feels more complicated and I feel like I can make more sense of it at the same time Because of this book.

Brilliant must read to understand race in America and the interdependence of race with gender and other oppressions. As much engaged social action as sociology, knowledge as the weapon to transform confusion and oppression.

I have borrowed and used this book so often from my university's library that I have finally bought my own copy! An excellent book which looks at Black Feminism without being overly preachy or condemning and Collins' writing style is very readable and insightful. I am a literature student and her writing on slavery and the plight of female slaves has inspired several essays. This book is probably most suitable for sociology students, but I would say any student look at ANY form of feminism would find this book very useful.
